About the Club
Burleigh Heads Rugby League Football Club is one of the oldest Rugby League Clubs on the Gold Coast.
It was originally formed by Mr Bob Singh in 1934 with Rudd Park as its home ground. After a nine-year cessation, in 1959 they reformed with Currumbin in hope of producing a stronger Rugby League Club. 1971 saw the club relocate to Pizzey Park, which is still their current home.
The club was founded in an effort to field three competitive grades in the Gold Coast Group 18 competition and to provide a social club for the population of the local area. Both of these factors have worked and today we have one team playing in the QLD State League Competition, a Hastings Deering Colts U20’s team and a Mal Meninga Cup U18’s team. The club also has a women’s side competing in the Division 1 Struddy’s Cup and three Rugby League Gold Coast teams – an Under 19s, Reserve Grade and A Grade. Our club boasts a playing and coaching staff that have been synonymous with Rugby League in Queensland. Names like Ray McCarron, Graeme Ambrose, Laurie Oar, Wayne Homer, Yogi Thompson, Mick Toomey, and Joe Tangatta Toa are still bandied around the Club as probably the best the Coast has seen.
This Club is fiercely competitive both on and off the paddock. We try to set an example, strive to ensure if we weren’t the best we did the best we could do. In recent times, we have won the Qld Cup in 2004 against Brisbane East’s, in extra time after 90 odd minutes of football, Burleigh came away with the trophy. Prior to that we won the Gold Coast Group 18 A Grade comp in 2000, the Qld Cup in 1999, the Group 18 A Grade in 1995 and won the three grades back in 1982. In 2006 we won three grades of the Gold Coast Competition. More recently we have been premiers in U19 Bycroft Cup 2008, 2011 and in 2012 A Grade and U19 premiers. Reserve Grade 2016 premiers, Womens Premiers and our Intrust Super Cup Premiers 2016. We continue to foster rugby league and try and build a better future for Rugby League on the Gold Coast.
